server.headerimage (Rust server ConVar)

How server.headerimage sets the Rust server browser banner from a URL, how it differs from server.logoimage, and why server.cfg beats writecfg.

Gotchas

  • server.writecfg does save it to serverauto.cfg, but server.readcfg runs serverauto.cfg first and server.cfg second, so a line in server.cfg wins.
  • It is a URL the server hands out, not a file upload; the image must stay reachable at that address.

server.headerimage is the address of the banner image for your server. The server's help text, which Facepunch marks as generated: "URL of the banner/header image shown at the top of this server's page in the server browser". Facepunch's server guide calls it the picture for the server and marks it optional.

It is a URL, not a file

The value is a web address, not an uploaded file, so the image has to be served from that address. Host it somewhere that will keep serving it at the same address, with a direct link to the image file rather than a page that shows the image.

server.headerimage "https://example.com/rust-banner.png"

Set it to "" to remove the banner.

Header image and logo image

Rust has a second image ConVar, server.logoimage, described by the server's generated help text as the "URL of the logo image shown for this server in the server browser". The header image is the banner at the top of the server's page; the logo is a separate image. Set them separately.

Applying and keeping it

It can be set on a running server, with no restart, over RCON or in the server console. Unlike most identity settings, server.writecfg does save it: our test server's serverauto.cfg had a server.headerimage line. That does not make serverauto.cfg the right place for it. The server's generated help text for server.readcfg says it runs serverauto.cfg first and server.cfg second, so a server.headerimage line in server.cfg overwrites whatever writecfg saved. Keep the value in server.cfg and treat serverauto.cfg as something the server writes, not a file you edit.

In Panelra

Header image is under Settings and applies instantly over RCON. Panelra writes both server.headerimage and server.logoimage into the server.cfg it regenerates on every apply and start, so the dashboard value is what the server ends up with.

Set it in Panelra

Change server.headerimage from the dashboard instead of editing files over SSH.

Web RCON console
  • server.logoimage(Generated) URL of the logo image shown for this server in the server browser
  • server.hostname(Generated) Server name displayed in the server browser
  • server.description(Generated) Short description of the server shown to players in the server browser
  • server.readcfg(Generated) Reads and executes serverauto.cfg then server.cfg from the server's cfg folder, applying all saved convar values
  • server.writecfgWrites config files

Skip the manual work: install the Panelra agent
