What server.url does in Rust: the website link in the server browser, how to clear it, applying it without a restart, and keeping it in server.cfg.

Gotchas

  • Leave it empty to show no link.
  • Not written to serverauto.cfg by server.writecfg, so keep it in server.cfg.

server.url is the website link for your server. The server's help text, which Facepunch marks as generated: "Server website URL displayed in the server browser; leave empty to show no link". Facepunch's server guide marks it as optional.

Setting and clearing it

It can be set on a running server, with no restart, over RCON or in the server console. Use a full address with the scheme:

server.url "https://example.com"

To remove the link, set it to an empty string, as the help text says:

server.url ""

Keeping it after a restart

server.writecfg does not save it; our test server's serverauto.cfg had no server.url line. Put the line in server.cfg. Facepunch's guide says server.cfg is read at startup and takes priority over the command line.

Point it at a page you control and expect to keep, such as your Discord invite page or a site with rules and wipe times, because the link is shown to everyone browsing for a server.

In Panelra

Website is under Settings and applies instantly over RCON. Panelra always writes the line to the server.cfg it regenerates on every apply and start, as an empty string when no website is set.

Set it in Panelra

Change server.url from the dashboard instead of editing files over SSH.

Web RCON console
  • server.hostname(Generated) Server name displayed in the server browser
  • server.description(Generated) Short description of the server shown to players in the server browser
  • server.headerimage(Generated) URL of the banner/header image shown at the top of this server's page in the server browser

Skip the manual work: install the Panelra agent

Wipes, updates, restarts, plugins and crash alerts for your Rust servers, from one dashboard. One install command on your Linux host, no inbound ports for the agent.
